If the word Chlorophyll immediately brought you back to elementary school science, you’re not alone. And if your first thought was murder or death- you’re probably thinking of chloroform, which is a totally different thing. Chlorophyll is the green stuff in plants that makes them green. And guys. IT’S AMAZING.
According to Now Foods, “Chlorophyll is a green pigment naturally produced by plants and algae and gives them their characteristic green color. Chlorophyll is critical for photosynthesis, the process by which sunlight is converted into chemical energy. Chlorophyll can function as a free radical neutralizer, may help to support the body’s detoxification processes and has been traditionally used as an internal deodorizer.”
If you’re not totally sold yet, here are 10 reasons why you should be incorporating it into your beauty routine (besides the fact that you’ll look super chic drinking it in public):
1. It clears up acne and gives you GORGEOUS skin.
Remember that thing called photosynthesis that chlorophyll is good for? It does that same thing inside of you. Cell turnover? Yes please. Damaged cells can now repair themselves, encouraging them to heal fine lines and wrinkles. Chlorophyll is also packed with antioxidants, which can block skin from creating free radicals- AKA healthier, more supple skin.
2. Chlorophyll helps promote a healthy gut and aids digestion.
Basically, chlorophyll activates your intestinal flora (AKA good bacteria) and uses it to stimulate your bowel movements, making things super regular (if you know what we mean.) It also makes for a natural healer to the intestinal tract, repairs damaged bowel tissues, and alleviates constipation and discomfort from gas.
3. It’s also said to reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Chlorophyll contains high levels of magnesium (rather than iron), which is a hardcore antioxidant and anticancer vehicle. Because it’s able to form tight molecular bonds with certain chemicals that contribute to oxidative damage within the immune system, it helps kick carcinogens and diseases like cancer + liver disease.
4. It gives you a HUGE energy boost.
Because chlorophylls main job is energy in plans, you can bet your ass it’s going to give the human body a jolt, too. Chlorophyll helps with the production of red blood cells and welcomes Vitamin D into the body, which makes for a happier and more awake you.
5. It curbs your appetite, aiding weight loss.
When taken orally, liquid chlorophyll can help maintain a healthy weight because of the energy it provides. More energy and less hunger = less overeating, amiright?
6. It slows down the progression of gray hair.
Research suggests that chlorophyll decreases oxidative damage caused by chemical carcinogens and radiation. Oxidation is the process that turns healthy hair gray- it happens both when you bleach your hair and age, so blondies, drink up; drinking the magic green means you’ll likely be able to go a few weeks longer without a salon appointment, too.
7. It’s super alkaline.
(In English, that means it’s rich with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory.)
8. It pumps oxygen to the brain.
Say Bye Felicia to headaches, dizziness, and altitude sickness- the reason that they happen in the first place is due to lack of oxygen to the noggin. This means it’s also great for altitude sickness, if you’re a frequent flyer or rock climbing connoisseur.
9. It’s a natural deodorizer- for ALL your scents.
Not joking. Chlorophyll deodorizes your body from the inside out- which means you can expect your pits, breath, and bathroom odors to smell fresh as a daisy. Which brings us to our next point.
10. It makes your lady bits smell amazing.
Some women are reporting feedback such as tasting like pancakes. (Sounds like a major plus.)
Anyway- throw it in your smoothie if you’re just starting out. You can also add some to hot tea (our preference) and work up to drinking it with water alone. Be sure to drink it through a straw though, because this baby means green… and stains your teeth. Like, fast.
